Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and the state Department of Environmental Protection filed six lawsuits against companies and individuals that allegedly polluted sites in cities with lower-income and minority communities in Kearny, Newark, and Trenton.

The lawsuits filed involve the following sites:

461-491 Fourth St., Newark (site of the Nanes Metal Finishing Company)

723-725 Chestnut St., Trenton (site of Sainte Marie Dry Cleaners)

1474 West State Street, Trenton (site of Schofield Cleaners)

260-268 Chestnut St., Camden (site of significant illegal dumping)

34-38 Stover Ave., Kearny (site of Auto Scrap)

66-68 North Park St., East Orange (site of Gas Mart)

“Today’s six enforcement actions are just the latest salvo in our ongoing efforts to stand up for environmental justice and to fight for communities across the state that have been ignored in the past,” Grewal said in the statement.

“All of our residents regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion deserve to live in communities free from the effects of pollution and are entitled to participate in decision-making that affects their environment, their communities, their homes, and their health,” Murphy had said at the time of the executive order’s signing. “Good environmental policy is something that must lift all communities.”

“For too long our urban communities have disproportionately suffered the injustice of polluted air and water,” said Michele S. Byers, executive director of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, in a statement. “The Murphy administration’s actions today will go a long way towards cleaning up pollution and improving the quality of life in our cities.”

Other environmental hazards that could potentially pollute the air also needs to be inspected for the public health of the people in the State of New Jersey.
